Dr. Shaun L. Smith
Dr. Smith was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica and has been living in the United States for the past 17 years. He currently resides in Hampton, Virginia. Dr. Smith graduated from Campion College in 1996 after completing his Advanced Level Examinations in Kingston, Jamaica. He then received his BSc. in Chemical Engineering (1998) from the Univeristy of Florida in Gainesville, Florida.
Dr. Smith began his career working as a Process Engineer in Kingman, Arizona. He later returned to College to pursue his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. He received his DDS in 2010 from Howard University College of Dentistry (Magna Cum Laude) in Washington, DC and was the Vice President of the College of Dentistry Student Council. He received recognition from the Restorative Department for excellence in restorative dentistry, awards from the American Association of Orthodontists, and several Trustee Scholarships from Howard University College of Dentistry. He was elected into membership of Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU), a national dental honor society, an honor reserved for a maximum of the top 12% of the graduating class.
He continued his Orthodontic training at one of the most recognized and esteemed universities for orthodontic training, Howard University College of Dentistry, where he received tutelage and instruction from the likes of Dr. Bao Vu and Dr. Avadis Abrahamian. Dr. Smith did research on Orthodontic movement of taurodont teeth and on resistance to sliding of different archwire-bracket combinations. His research was submitted to the Journal of Clinical Dentistry. Dr. Smith graduated in 2012 with a Certificate in Orthodontics. He joined Kool Smiles in 2012 and sees Orthodontics patients in Newport News and Hampton.
Dr. Smith is currently a member of the University of Florida Alumni Association, Howard University Orthodontics Alumni Association, the John McGriff Dental Society, the American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontics. He is also an adjunct professor in Orthodontics at the University of Technology, School of Dental Sciences in Jamaica, W.I.
Away from the practice, Dr. Smith enjoys playing his guitar, reading, practicing karate, various outdoor activities, travelling and volunteering.
